The last couple of days I have been working with my 7/8 the grade class on making some large murals. One is for Sparta and one is for Athens. The students first had to do an individual assignment about comparing and contrasting these two cities during ancient times in Greece.
Now they are gathering information and making fabulous art work which we will compile and put on two murals. I am curious to see what the final product will look like.

The murals sound like an awesome extension to your Olympics activities! I feel like extended projects like that one are really beneficial for students, and help us get deeper into subject matter. We keep hearing the phrase "a mile wide and an inch deep." Often I feel that I could provide a better foundation for students if I focused on certain things -- shall I say "concepts!" -- and left out many details of other units. While students wouldn't get quite the overview of these other units, their critical thinking skills might be developed more, which would more effectively allow them to further pursue topics that are genuinely of interest.
ReplyDeleteGood luck, and have fun:)
What I really like about this idea is that you assigned an assignment comparing and contrasting the two cities, and then gave them a cross-curricular, so-to-say, project that is something different from everyday lectures. Otherwise if you had the students compare and contrast when doing the mural simultaneously, they may have not retained the information as well. Great idea! I love ancient Greece!
ReplyDeleteKatie, I really like this idea and project! It seems like a great way for students to be able to visualize and recognize the similarities and differences between the two cities while simultaneously tapping into their other intelligences as well. Consider it stolen!
ReplyDeleteKatie, I am sure that Eric Cooke will like this project, too. I love the chatter among youse guys!
ReplyDeleteWe are now working on Persian/Greek war diaries. I am doing pretty well with this large class of middle school students but I feel as though I am getting tested by a few of the boys. This is to be expected and I am using my behavior strategies, such as pulling them aside and talking to them individually as well relocating them to different parts of the classroom. I am also working on keeping up my repoire with them. I know these are all helping, because the infractions are not terrible just a little disruptive at times.
ReplyDeleteIs the best I can expect from this age group of kids?
I will take any input.
