I am having the students taste greek food because we are going on a field trip! We are going to the Greek Cusina restaurant on March 18th in Portland, Oregon. This restaurant is used to having groups of students come and eat Greek lunch and get some exposure to Greek culture. My cooperating teacher loves to take field trips so he was all for the idea.
So far I have given the class Greek olives, hummus, greek bread and feta cheese. They love this activity. I am finding that some students are more adventuresome than others. Many of them have not had this kind of food, so the exposure is good for them.

That's awesome! I think the ideal field trip in Spanish class would be to take the kids to a Mexican restaurant and have them order in Spainsh. To set this up we would practice all the vocabulary and phrases necessary to order food and tell the staff that the food was great. I would also prepare the restaurant for our visit.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I will be able to do that here at LHS, but hopefully sometime in the future.
Have fun at Greek Cusina, I wish I was going with you!

That sounds really fun and food is a great way to really connect with something. You know how a smell can bring you back to a long lost memory. I bet the students will remember more about Greece than other places just because of the food experience. It's also great for kids to try new foods from the perspective of personal nutrition.
ReplyDeleteField trips are awesome! I was doing a little research on school districts and found this link about a teacher in Walla Walla who is doing the same topic as you as of last week. Maybe you could contact him and see if he has more ideas! http://www.wwps.org/news/closeups/Doug_Venneri_Close-Up_021309.pdf There is an audio clip that goes with it as well.

ReplyDeleteThat sounds like so much fun! Wish I could go. We only have a lot of good Mexican restaurants in Brookings, but no other ethnic food. I wonder how I could work something like that into a science trip.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately hummus is not Greek. I always thought it was and I was very disappointed when I tried looking for it when I was in Greece - it no where to be found. Hummus is actually a Middle Eastern dish. It’s funny how it is a common appetizer in Greek restaurants in the U.S.
